Children’s Eyecare
A child's eyes are constantly developing throughout their early years, and any changes in their vision can significantly impact both their learning and social development.
At MacAdorey Optometrists, we understand the vital role that healthy vision plays in a child's growth, and we're dedicated to providing expert eyecare to support their visual needs at every stage of development.

Eye Tests for Children
At MacAdorey Optometrist in Newry, a children's eye examination is a thorough and engaging process designed to ensure your child’s vision and eye health are on track. During the exam, our experienced optometrists use a variety of age-appropriate tests to assess visual acuity, eye coordination, and overall eye health.
These tests are non-invasive and are tailored to suit the child's age and level of understanding, making the experience both comfortable and enjoyable. Children’s eye exams are free of charge (until age 16), meaning there is no obstacle to making sure your child has the best possible vision and eye health.
We provide personalised advice on how to care for their eyes, and if necessary, recommend the most suitable eyewear or treatments to support their visual development.
Myopia Management
Myopia, or shortsightedness, is a common refractive error where distant objects appear blurry, while close objects are clear. It occurs when the eye grows too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina.
For parents of a child with myopia, slowing its progression is important to prevent it from worsening over time, which can increase the risk of eye health issues later in life, such as retinal damage or glaucoma.
Managing myopia can be done through spectacle lenses, such as those designed with myopia control technology, or contact lenses like orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses or dual-focus lenses. These options can help reduce the rate at which myopia progresses and preserve eye health.

Visual Stress
Visual stress (Meares-Irlen Syndrome) is sensitivity to visual patterns.
This can cause visual perception problems which can interfere with reading even if the child has normal vision. Symptoms include:
- Complaining of moving print/words
- Becoming tired quickly whilst reading
- Headaches or visual discomfort
- Red, sore, watery eyes.
If you have any concerns about yours or your child's sight or reading ability, please call us and we will be happy offer in-practice consultations or testing with one of our qualified opticians.
